More Than $47 Million to Iowa from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development
WASHINGTON, DC – June 25, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — Senator Chuck Grassley today said that Iowa will receive grants totaling $47,019,240 from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The funding comes from the Community Development Block Grants program, the Emergency Shelter Grants program, the HOME program, and the Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS program.
“These funds will help provide decent, safe housing options for Iowans across the state,” Grassley said.

The Emergency Shelter Grants program provides annual grants to state, local, and private entities to improve the quality and number of emergency homeless shelters.
The HOME program helps to expand the supply of decent, affordable housing to low- and very low-income families by providing grants to states and local governments to fund housing programs that meet local needs and priorities.
The Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS program provides housing assistance and related supportive services to local governments, states and non-profit organizations for projects that benefit low-income persons medically diagnosed with HIV/AIDS and their families.

In Johnson County, the Alliance for the Mentally Ill chapter is trying to purchase a building for remodeling (or construct a new one, for which we have architect’s plans) to house PERMANENTLY homeless, mentally ill veterans.
Housing is intended for 5-6 residents according to the well-established Fairweather Lodge model, in which residents are responsible for each other, maintenance of building, meals, etc., with over-arching supervision by a social agency (in this case, Shelter House).
Please advise about whom we should contact about applying for a grant for the purpose.
