FEMA Waives Rent Collection for Temporary Housing Units Until January 1, 2010

WASHINGTON- Senator Chuck Grassley today applauded the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) decision to delay the collection of rent from households remaining in FEMA-provided temporary housing units due to the 2008 floods until January 1, 2010.  Grassley had requested an extension to help the transitioning families from facing the expense just before the holidays.

“I’m pleased FEMA granted this one-month extension for the transitioning families to help get them through the holidays,” Grassley said. “This will allow the flood victims a little extra time to get back on their feet. I will continue to work with FEMA on this important issue as the recovery continues.”

In Iowa, FEMA temporarily housed 592 families in response to the 2008 floods. According to FEMA, 519 families have successfully transitioned into more permanent, suitable and functional housing. Additionally, 37 families have scheduled move out inspections and will be vacating units during the next several days.
