HUD Awards Funds for Permanent Supportive Housing

Sioux City, IA – May 4, 2011 – (RealEstateRama) — U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan awarded more than $216 million to nearly 700 new homeless programs across the country. This amount represents $26 million more than last year’s grants and, combined with renewal funding announced earlier this year, represents the most homelessness assistance ever awarded by HUD. Three categories of funding were available:

• Supportive Housing Program (SHP): Offers housing and supportive services to allow homeless persons to live as independently as possible.
• Shelter Plus Care (S+C): Provides housing and supportive services on a long-term basis for homeless persons with disabilities, (primarily those with serious mental illness, chronic problems with alcohol and/or drugs, and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) or related diseases) and their families who were living in places not intended for human habitation (e.g., streets) or in emergency shelters.
• Single-Room Occupancy Program (SRO): Provides rental assistance for homeless persons in one-person housing units that contain small kitchens, bathrooms, or both.

The Siouxland Coalition to End Homelessness (SCEH) submitted a total of seven project applications from five member agencies for funding under the Supportive Housing Program (SHP). Continued funding for the five renewal projects was announced in December. . Today, SCEH is elated to announce that the two new Permanent Supportive Housing projects have also been awarded SHP funding. . Crittenton Center was awarded $108,759 and Center For Siouxland was awarded $131,922. Both agencies will use the funds to provide long-term, community-based housing that has supportive services for homeless individuals and families with disabilities (i.e. substance abuse, serious mental illness). This type of supportive housing enables special needs populations to break the cycle of homelessness and live as independently as possible in a permanent setting. Funds are expected to be received after July 1, 2011.
