Iowa Finance Authority awards more than $2 million in grants to assist 123 homeless assistance projects in 35 Iowa counties
Homeless Iowans and families to benefit from state and federal resources
Des Moines, IA – November 7, 2011 – (RealEstateRama) — The Iowa Finance Authority Board of Directors recently announced awards of more than $2 million in state and federal grants to assist homeless assistance projects in 35 counties throughout the state. The funds are made available through the Homeless Assistance Program, which is a combination of the federal Emergency Shelter Grant program and the state Shelter Assistance Fund programs and are jointly administered by the Iowa Finance Authority.
“Although the Iowa Finance Authority has made tremendous strides in improving the availability of affordable housing for working families in Iowa, we know that not everyone has a safe, decent and affordable place to call home,” said Iowa Finance Authority Executive Director Dave Jamison. “The more than $2 million in homeless assistance grants announced today will work to ensure that Iowa’s most vulnerable citizens have access to the resources they need on the road to self-sufficiency.”
The Homeless Assistance Program funding may provide cities, counties and private, nonprofit organizations with funding to support operations and maintenance costs of homelessness, domestic violence and transitional shelters. The program may also assist with essential supportive services for homeless Iowans and families and grants for short-term homeless prevention assistance. The Iowa Finance Authority received 132 applications representing more than $4.3 million in requests.

The Iowa Legislature created The Iowa Finance Authority, the state’s housing finance agency, in 1975 to undertake programs to assist in the attainment of housing for low-and moderate-income Iowans.
