WASHINGTON, DC – June 25, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — Senator Chuck Grassley today said that Iowa will receive grants totaling $47,019,240 from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The funding comes from the Community Development Block Grants program, the Emergency Shelter Grants program, the HOME program, and the Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS program.

“These funds will help provide decent, safe housing options for Iowans across the state,” Grassley said.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development will distribute the money as shown below.

  • Council Bluffs will receive $1,077,608 through the Community Development Block Grants program.
  • Des Moines will receive $4,273,411 through the Community Development Block Grants program.
  • Des Moines will receive $189,094 through the Emergency Shelter Grants program.
  • Des Moines will receive $1,086,850 through the HOME program.

  • Iowa will receive $11,026,837 through the HOME program.
  • Iowa will receive $367,359 through the Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS program.

The Community Development Block Grants program provides annual grants to states and local governments to develop viable urban communities by providing decent housing and a suitable living environment, and by expanding economic opportunities, principally for low- and moderate-income persons.

The Emergency Shelter Grants program provides annual grants to state, local, and private entities to improve the quality and number of emergency homeless shelters.

The HOME program helps to expand the supply of decent, affordable housing to low- and very low-income families by providing grants to states and local governments to fund housing programs that meet local needs and priorities.

The Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS program provides housing assistance and related supportive services to local governments, states and non-profit organizations for projects that benefit low-income persons medically diagnosed with HIV/AIDS and their families.
