$399,875 to Help Iowa’s Homeless Veterans

-

WASHINGTON, DC – June 23, 2010 – (RealEstateRama) — Senator Chuck Grassley today said that the U.S. Department of Labor has awarded two grants totaling $399,875 to Iowa organizations through the Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program.

“Veterans put their lives on the line for this country and we owe them a great deal.  This funding should help homeless veterans reenter the workforce,” Grassley said.

The Department of Labor will distribute the money as shown below.

• Goodwill Industries of Central Iowa in Des Moines will receive a $199,875 grant
• Goodwill Industries of the Heartland in Iowa City will receive a $200,000 grant

According to the Department of Labor, the Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program serves veterans who may not be eligible for other programs and services.  The employment focus of this program distinguishes it from most other programs for the homeless, which concentrate on more immediate needs.  The veterans may receive occupational, classroom, on-the-job training and job search and placement services.

Each year, thousands of local Iowa organizations, colleges and universities, individuals and state agencies apply for competitive grants from the federal government.  The funding is then awarded based on each local organization or individual’s ability to meet criteria set by the federal entity.
