Sioux City Housing Authority Partners with Department of Veterans Affairs to offer Rental Assistance for Homeless Veterans.

SIOUX CITY, IA – July 22, 2010 – (RealEstateRama) — The Sioux City Housing Authority (SCHA) is pleased to announce in collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) that the VA will be hosting an informational meeting and accepting applications for the HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) Voucher Program on Friday, July 23, 2010, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Mid-town Community Center at 525 14th Street.

The HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) voucher program combines HUD Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) Rental Assistance for homeless veterans with case management and clinical services provided by the Veterans Affairs at its medical centers and in the community.

The case managers at the VA are responsible for referring eligible homeless veterans to SCHA. Therefore, any interested homeless veteran will need to contact the VA office directly. SCHA has no role in determining or verifying the veteran’s homeless status. Only the VA will make that determination. It is HUD’s intent to fully renew all HUD-VASH vouchers. However, such renewals are always subject to Congressional appropriations.

“We are excited at this partnership with the Sioux City Housing Authority to provide housing to homeless Veterans,” said Candice Cummings, VA Homeless Coordinator, “This partnership reflects the national goal of Veterans Affairs to end Homelessness among Veterans within five years.”

The Sioux Falls Veterans Assistance Center took into account the population of homeless veterans needing services in the Sioux City area and the number of homeless veterans served by the homeless programs at the Sioux Falls VAMC and Sioux City Veterans Affairs Office. The Sioux City Housing Authority (SCHA) was invited by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to apply for 25 HUD-VASH Vouchers this spring. After consulting with Sioux Falls VAMC staff, the SCHA responded to HUD’s invitation and agreed to administer 25 Housing Choice Vouchers to begin a Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) Program.

“By agreeing to administer the HUD-VASH vouchers, the SCHA furthers the cause of providing affordable housing to those income eligible individuals and families who might otherwise be unable to pay rent and might subsequently remain homeless,” said Amy Tooley, Housing Services Manager.
