Area Road Construction Update

April 30, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — Gordon Drive – The Iowa Department of Transportation has reduced traffic to one lane in each direction for HMA Patching on IA 12 (Gordon Drive) from US 20 west to Pearl Street. Construction is anticipated to be complete May 29th.

Gospel Mission – Approximately one block of West 6th Street is closed, from Wesley Way to Bluff Street, until May 11th for construction associated with the new Gospel Mission site.

Airport Drainage Improvements – Contractors will begin removals and storm sewer improvements May 1st, weather permitting, which requires lane restrictions along AL Haynes Drive from Expedition Court to the end of the cul-de-sac.

Whispering Creek – The intersection of Whispering Creek and Castles Gate will be restricted to a single lane with alternating traffic from Tuesday, May 5th until Friday, May 8th. Motorists should expect delays and trucks are advised to use an alternate route.

West 24th Street Reconstruction – West 24th Street is closed from Perry Creek to the west side of Hamilton Boulevard until May 31st. Geneva Street is closed to through traffic from 23rd Street to 25th Street through May 31st. Beginning April 24th and lasting one week, the contractor will be closing one lane of southbound traffic on Hamilton Blvd from 25th to 23rd and closing the north lane of 24th Street just east of Hamilton Blvd. This project includes the reconstruction of underground utilities and removal and replacement of the existing pavement on West 24th Street, from Geneva Street to Hamilton Boulevard.

Jackson Street Reconstruction – This total reconstruction project, which is a continuation of what was constructed last summer, requires the closure of Jackson Street between 22nd Street and 24th Street. An extended detour, requiring the closure of Jackson to through traffic from 21st to 25th, is in effect through the end of April. As a safety measure, parking has been restricted to one lane along the detour route and no parking will be permitted on 22nd Street while it is part of the detour. Contractors are currently installing new underground utilities. Construction on Jackson Street is anticipated to be complete by June 19th.

Cunningham Drive Reconstruction Phase II: Cunningham Drive will be closed to through traffic from Dodge Avenue to the Old Floyd Channel Bridge while contractors work on removing existing paving and replacing water main, sanitary sewer and storm sewer and placing new 37 foot wide paving. This phase of construction will be complete and the road reopened by June 1st. Contractors have the center lanes of Dace Avenue at Steuben Street closed for a sanitary sewer repair, this work is anticipated to be complete by May 1st.

West 17th Street Reconstruction – West 17th Street will be closed from Ross Street to George Street from April 1st through June 1st for underground utility improvements and street widening. This project is in partnership with the Sioux City Community School District’s Smith-Everett School Replacement and Site Improvements Project. A block and a half of W. 16th Street, west of Rebecca, is being vacated and permanently removed. A block and a half of George Street, from 17th Street to Remsen Place, is being vacated and permanently removed.

Alley Improvements – The east-west alley from South Alice Street to Cecelia Street between Garretson Avenue and Orleans Avenue is currently closed for repaving and will be reopened by mid-May.

W. 18th Street Emergency Repair – A portion of West 18th Street, located east of Hamilton Blvd. (between Taco Bell and Burger King), will be temporarily closed for underground utility work beginning April 27th and lasting approximately five days.

Dale Street Park Improvements – No closures at this time, but construction is underway. The alley to the east, between 15th and 16th, will be closed for approximately two weeks beginning April 27th. Contractors will be making park improvements including prep for a basketball court, shelter, drinking fountains, splash pad, and irrigation system and making underground utility connections.

Heights Neighborhood Reconstruction – Pending City Council approval of contracts, Stage I construction will begin on or after Tuesday, May 5th. This stage requires the closure of Cook Drive, Valley Drive at McDonald Drive and McDonald Drive between East Solway and Summit Street. This stage of construction is anticipated to be complete by July 31st, at which point construction on Stage II will begin. Outer Drive Bridge over the Floyd River – The Floyd River bike trail is closed from 28th Street to Jefferson Street.

Sunnybrook Community Church North Entrance Road – Sunnybrook Community Church is building a new entrance road from the north end of their existing parking lot to Lorraine Avenue. The connection to Lorraine Avenue will be made approximately 345 feet west of the centerline of South Lyon Street. This work will require the temporary closure of the south lane of Lorraine Avenue from 500 feet west to 250 feet west of South Lyon Street. This closure is projected to begin late in the week of May 4th.
